Project Hope Worldwide
Why I Choose to be a Child Sponsor
By Darlene Clark
I’m sure you’ve heard the saying, “Our actions speak louder than words.” Well, as a parent, I knew there was some truth in this statement. I wanted my daughters to grow up with hearts full of compassion. One of the first tangible memories of this is when my daughter Courtney won $100 dollars in a writing contest in 2nd grade. Rather than buying an American Girl Doll (every 8 year old girl’s dream), she decided to spend all of the money on items to fill shoeboxes for Samaritans’ Purse, something we’d done together the previous year.
We began sponsoring a child in Thailand through Compassion International about 15 years ago and continue to today. When the Fleges introduced us to Project Hope Worldwide, we wanted that same personal connection. The letters we receive, as well as the gift of bringing hope through Christ to an orphan in Uganda, is such a blessing to our family. In addition to basic needs, Lydia now has a loving family, an education, and the knowledge of Jesus Christ. She also knows that there are people like me who love her and pray for her daily.
I believe my actions have continued to influence my daughters’ lives. Courtney has traveled to Thailand to teach English to the refugees in the north. She is currently working in a low-income preschool in Seattle with children from places like Ethiopia and Somalia through a program called Jumpstart. Sarah has been on five mission trips, sponsors her own child (Rozalba) through Project Hope, and is looking into a masters in International Care and Community Development.
Yes, there are many other reasons why I chose to be a child sponsor, just as I’m sure there are many other actions that have brought compassion into my daughters’ hearts. One thing I know for sure is that being a child sponsor has blessed us all. It’s a dream of mine to one day soon meet Lydia (my Ugandan daughter) and give her the biggest hug ever!
